Getting the right haircut is step one. Knowing how to style it at home — for your specific face shape — is what separates a guy who looks polished from one who just looks like he had a recent haircut.
At VIA Domus in Kennesaw, GA, we don't just hand you a receipt and send you out the door. We talk about how to maintain the cut and style it between appointments. This post is the extended version of that conversation — broken down by head shape so you know exactly what you're working toward every morning.
"Styling isn't about fighting your hair. It's about knowing which direction to push it — and why."
Oval FaceStyling Goal: Work With Your Texture
With an oval face, the structure is already balanced — so styling is more about your hair type than your face shape. You have the freedom to direct volume wherever you want it without overcompensating for anything.
Volume UpGreat for adding personality. Use a round brush blow-dry to build height at the roots. A matte clay or paste gives you control without weight.
Volume DownSleek and intentional works equally well. A light pomade smoothed through damp hair and combed flat reads clean and sharp.
Key ProductMatte clay for textured looks. Light-hold pomade for sleek styles. Either works — pick based on your vibe that day.
Morning RoutineTowel dry → apply product to damp hair → shape with fingers or comb → let air-dry or hit with a blow dryer. 5 minutes max.

Round FaceStyling Goal: Build Height, Not Width
On a round face, every styling decision should be about drawing the eye upward. Volume on the sides works against you — volume on top works for you. The goal is length and lift, not fullness.
The MoveBlow-dry your hair upward and back from the roots using a medium-heat dryer. Use a vent brush or your fingers to push the roots up first, then lay the top section over. This creates height at the crown without puffing the sides.
AvoidDiffusing on high heat and letting the hair expand outward — this adds width. Blowing your hair flat to the sides.
Key ProductA lightweight volumizing mousse at the roots before blow-drying, then a medium-hold matte paste to finish. Avoids weight pulling the height down throughout the day.
Morning RoutineTowel dry → mousse at roots → blow dry upward → shape the top section → paste through the ends for texture. 8–10 minutes.

Square FaceStyling Goal: Add Softness and Movement
Square faces have defined edges — and the right styling introduces just enough movement and texture to soften the angles without dulling the strength. Think intentionally undone, not perfect.
The MovePush your hair slightly forward and to one side rather than straight back. A slight forward lean breaks the line of the forehead. Finger-style through the crown for separation rather than combing it flat.
AvoidVery stiff, structured styles that sit flat and reinforce the geometric face shape. Hard side parts that create another sharp line parallel to the jaw.
Key ProductTexturizing paste or a medium-hold clay. Work it through slightly damp hair with your fingers — not a comb. The texture does the softening work.
Morning RoutineTowel dry → small amount of clay worked through with fingers → rough-dry with a dryer while shaping → leave some movement in the top. 7 minutes.

Diamond FaceStyling Goal: Widen the Forehead, Frame the Face
Diamond faces are wide at the cheekbones and narrow at the top and bottom. Styling should add presence to the forehead area — whether through a fringe that sits across it or by directing volume toward the temples rather than straight up.
The MoveIf you have a fringe or textured fringe, blow-dry it forward and slightly to each side rather than straight down. This widens the visual width of your forehead. If you have more length, let the hair fall naturally around the temples with soft volume.
AvoidPulling everything back tightly off the forehead — this exposes the narrow top and emphasizes the wide cheekbones. Very sleek, combed-back styles.
Key ProductA light sea salt spray for natural movement and volume that isn't heavy. Finish with a tiny amount of serum through the ends to control frizz without weighing the hair down.
Morning RoutineSpray salt spray on damp hair → rough-dry with fingers → let the fringe fall forward naturally → small amount of paste or serum to define. 5–6 minutes.

Long / Oblong FaceStyling Goal: Add Width, Break the Vertical
Long faces need styling that interrupts the vertical flow of the face — a fringe does part of that work, and the styling reinforces it. You want horizontal volume and a fringe that sits across the forehead, not above it.
The MoveBlow-dry your fringe directly downward onto the forehead — not up, not to the side. Let it sit across the forehead with natural weight. Style the sides outward slightly to add width at the cheekbones.
AvoidAny height on top — this is the single biggest mistake on long faces. A tall quiff or pompadour adds visual length to an already long face. Keep the top flat-to-medium.
Key ProductA smoothing cream or light serum to keep the fringe lying flat without stiffness. If your hair has natural volume, a very light hold pomade keeps things from going sideways.
Morning RoutineTowel dry → smoothing cream through damp hair → blow-dry fringe straight down with a flat brush → let the rest air-dry or rough-dry with low heat. 6 minutes.

The Universal Rule
Whatever your face shape, the one thing that applies across the board: style your hair while it's still slightly damp. Products have about 60% less control over dry hair. If you're trying to shape a completely dry head of hair, you're working against yourself before you even start.
Towel dry, apply product, shape, and then let it finish drying. Or blow-dry into the shape you want. Either way — damp is your starting point.
And when in doubt, come back in. Styling is something we talk about at every appointment at VIA Domus. It doesn't have to be a mystery.
